Rio Grande do Sul has approximately 2,700 furniture companies – out of the 14,000 manufacturers in the country, accounting for 18% of country’s sales. In this context, Bento Gonçalves belongs to the region with the largest representation in the segment. Serra Gaúcha accounts for 33.8% of the furniture companies in RS, according to data from IEMI, 2009. Of the approximately 390 million pieces produced annually in Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul is responsible for almost 70 million. The state’s share in exports totaled approximately US$ 200 million in 2009, while the country sold US$ 707 million to the international market during the same period.
